“Layers” – a performance exploring care, imagination, and embodied worlds

Part of Rollercoaster 2025: Fiesta / Cricoteka, Kraków

I’m thrilled to share Layers, a dance performance I had the joy of contributing to as part of the creative team. Choreographed and performed by Katarzyna Żeglicka and Alicja Czyczel, the work is a radical, tender exploration of care, hope, and communal transformation.

In Layers, we ask: what does care look like — beyond norms, beyond competition, beyond convention? Grounded in the idea of radical imagination (as articulated by thinkers like Alexa Khasnabish and Max Haiven), the performance draws on personal stories, queer feminist perspectives, and the histories of bodies often placed outside mainstream narratives. It creates a space where solidarity and resistance are not abstract ideas, but lived, danced gestures.

The piece embraces a relaxed performance format — inviting audiences to move, sit, lie down, and experience the work in ways that feel right for them, rather than through strict theatrical conventions. This openness isn’t just logistical: it mirrors our artistic intention to make space for authentic presence, vulnerability, and shared imagination.

Visually and sonically, Layers integrates movement with sound, video, and gesture to build a layered narrative — one that imagines worlds beyond patriarchal and capitalist structures, inspired in part by Lectura Fácil and artistic figures like Frida Kahlo.

For me, working on this piece has been a deep dive into care as creative practice — where choreography becomes a way to reimagine how we support each other, how we claim space, and how art can open doors to possibility.
